Finalist – National Group Excellence Award 2023
Ryman has consistently been recognised in our People’s Choice Awards. The Ryman Healthcare model began over 35 years ago with the adage that it’s got to be “good enough for mum or dad”, and with five of its facilities taking out awards for this year, it’s clear they have achieved that goal. Kim Dawson – Village Manager from Ryman’s Keith Park Retirement Village commented “It’s this kind of acknowledgment that allows us to reflect and to know that everyone’s efforts have contributed to the result, the recognition makes it all worthwhile.”

WINNER - BEST MULTI-FACILITY / GROUP PROVIDER (NATIONWIDE) 2022
The Ryman Healthcare model started over 35 years ago with the adage that it’s got to be “good enough for mum or dad”, a philosophy that they have continued to uphold while pioneering much of the change within the village and aged care space. With two of their villages taking out two of the four Best Villages awards, plus two Finalist awards, Ryman continues to prove a popular People’s Choice.
Full continuum of care, with rest home, hospital and special care facilities are standard with most of the Rymans offering, and their villages normally include an all-weather bowling green, café, heated indoor pool, hairdresser, beauty therapist and library. Cheyne Chalmers, Ryman Healthcare CEO NZ said:
“We were delighted to take out these awards because they are recognition from the people who know us best and have taken the time to review us. The recognition is a tribute to a team who work so hard each day to provide the best possible experience for our residents and their families. Thank you New Zealand!’
With another 15 villages either planned or under construction in New Zealand and Australia, and a further 12 as ‘green fields or brown fields’ (landbanked), Ryman Healthcare are wanting to meet future demand for their services that residents continue to speak highly about.

WINNER - BEST MULTI-FACILITY / GROUP PROVIDER (NATIONWIDE) 2020
Spanning from Whangarei to Invercargill, Ryman Healthcare aims to emulate a family-oriented approach at their 36 retirement villages.
Co-founder Kevin Hickman says the priority has always been providing care “good enough for mum or dad.” And this vision translates into how the team intentionally invest in both their staff and residents. Ryman Healthcare believes happy staff make for happy residents. Consequently, they claim their focused training phase for new employees is imperative to the wellbeing of the entire village – imparting shared values, providing staff with the right tools and consistently looking for ways to help them develop.
Villager manager Merrin Jack also attests their loyal team of fans can be attributed to the kind, empathetic and professional care from staff. With an overall rating of 92% across more than 600 reviews, Ryman are confident they are meeting a standard of excellence. In one review, a resident says the management is intentional and thorough, identifying “excellent care, thoughtfulness and response to any suggestions made.” However, it’s not just the staff but the facilities that appear to be popular with residents.
The facilities offered in Ryman villages include independent apartments and townhouses, serviced apartments, and rest home, hospital and dementia level care. Although each village varies in size and facilities, each is purpose-built, surrounded by gardens and amenities. Ranging from swimming pools to movie theatres to cafes, Ryman Healthcare hopes they can provide opportunities for all residents to get involved in something they enjoy.
Although the COVID-19 outbreak has had a huge impact nationally, Ryman believes it has highlighted their excellence in service. During the outbreak, staff were purposeful about creating safe havens for their residents. Delivered groceries, complimentary morning and afternoon teas, happy hours in bags and regular flu jabs were organised to give residents comfort during a difficult season.
